Today I celebrated my 50th ride on an indoor, stationary bike!
55 days ago (11 Nov), I hated working out indoors, ESPECIALLY on stationary bikes 👎
Today I celebrated my 50th ride on an indoor, stationary bike.
How on earth did that happen? What created the dramatic personal change?
Well, I think Peloton combines all the powerful learnings we learn from Nir Eyal's book Hooked, and James Clear’s book Atomic Habits.
Here are some examples:
🚲 It's built around community (I vibe with the #PelotonAustralia community) - we jump on live rides together weekly, geek out on our favourite apparel, really just 900 Australian based peloton superfans - but there are hundreds of different communities out there (including #pelotondogmoms !)
🚲 It’s driven by our internal drive to improve our status: When you have a “milestone” ride, you’re rewarded by high fives with fellow cyclists, there’s lots of badges to win, you’re recognised for streaks (daily and weekly). When you jump into a ride, you join a leaderboard and while all the instructors tell you to compete against yourself, you’re definitely checking out where you are in the pecking order!
🚲 Progress-tracking and the metrics - Sometimes the hardest part about any type of venture we take on, is recording the wins at a progress v destination level. Peloton measures progress!
🚲 Viral nature - look, here I am posting about it. Post-workout it also creates a neat graphic with your stats, that you feel proud posting on to IG Stories. You also get a free shirt when you get to your 100th ride, my goal is to get there in 80 days or less!
🚲 The variety! Variety of instructors to try out (my fave is Matt Wilpers), variety of workouts, variety of long-term programs
The music and Artist specials (such a huge range from 2000 Pop Music, to Foo Fighters, to Broadway Rides and Country Music).
🚲🚲🚲
Essentially creates the experience, the moments, the community and the IDEAL ENVIRONMENT - for progress. As a result, my daily behaviour has changed immediately.
It just shows that dramatic change can happen immediately. It doesn't require lists, or goals, soul-searching, or a great deal of planning.
This is the type of change I help organisations create using my Charismatic Change framework. Change can be immediate and powerful (not slow, draining and full of process).
