Workshop Show Notes: The 2-Hour Workshop Rooftop Extravaganza in Perth

Hi Rooftoppers/People who go to karaoke bars and don’t sing karaoke,

I don’t think I can remember everything we discussed, but if there’s something you’d like to add here, please do! Simply email me (hello@leannehughes.com) and I’ll compile more here.

Here are some workshoppy things I packed for Perth:

  • Blue painters tape from Bunnings

  • My tibetan bell

  • The 5 second game

  • Post-it notes; including the fun bright ones from Overflow/Reject Shop

  • Copies of The 2-Hour Workshop Blueprint

  • Photo cards which I print out from Kmart. I create these in Canva and tailor them for the session, I have lots of generic photo ones, as well as some fun meme ones. I save anything that makes me laugh on my phone under an album

  • Here’s a video of me setting up the room

How do you draw a group back when it’s animated?

  • Joel uses music!

  • Wait for the lull

  • Use the bell

  • Find someone else in the group to whistle

Key prompts:

  • Highlighted the SPARK framework and the 7 Practices of Highly Effective Workshop Hosts, with a key emphasis on “Begin with the experience in mind”

Three ways to create your own activities:

  1. Design a framework and ask questions off the back of it (which quadrant are you in right now? Where do you want to be? What will it take to get there?)

  2. Forced Connections: Look for attributes, features that relate to your topic and find connections. I talk more about this in my podcast conversation with Andrew Hollo (Energy is the currency of what we do)

  3. Fly Above like an eagle! When is your session? What are current events that are trending? How can you weave this in? (example, my opening question about your karaoke song)

Leanne’s Personal facilitation reflections:

  • It’s okay not to use powerpoint, but make sure your activity instructions are precise!

  • Find a venue with a working entrance door 🙂 that aside, pretty awesome place and can DRAMATICALLY impact your experience

  • Facilitators make the best participants

  • Everyone needs a Mel Lithgow at their event taking photos and sharing them via Whatsapp after the event!

  • Take the time to give your workshop a great name. If I didn’t use the word extravaganza, we wouldn’t have met Shani!!
