When is the best time to communicate change?

"So much of life is not about whether you're good or bad, or right or wrong, or can afford or not afford - it's just about timing." - A. A. Gill, 'Uncle Dysfunctional'

"When is the best time to communicate change?” - that’s the question I’m taking on this week and using a 2 x 2 matrix to explain my thoughts as part of a new, weekly segment called "Two by Tuesday".

Often when you’re going through change, or leading change within a company, it’s the timing and way you communicate that seems to have a bigger impact on people, over the actual change.

I consider two things when it comes to communicating change in this episode:
- Certainty of the change (x axis)
- Perception of the impact (positive or negative)

Certainty: How certain are you of what the change actually looks like? Can you provide support, resources, timing information? Are you aware of the actual impact it will have on people?

Impact perception: Here, you'll need to predict whether the change/intervention is going to be positive, or negative -- in the eyes of the people it will be impacting.
