Your “work wife”, your “business bestie”, your “M-F mate” (just quietly, that’s Monday-Friday mate… I know what you’re thinking 😏!).
I was shocked when I discovered the most controversial question asked in decades of Gallup employee engagement research was this: “Do you have a best friend at work?”
I thought the direct value of having a work wife was having that reliable coffee buddy in the morning; someone I could grab for a quick walk around the block when I needed to vent, or brainstorm an idea… But did you know that having a good mate at work has strong links to performance?
Gallup reports that employees who report having a best friend at work were:
✅43% more likely to report having received praise or recognition for their work in the last seven days.
✅37% more likely to report that someone at work encourages their development.
✅35% more likely to report coworker commitment to quality.
✅28% more likely to report that in the last six months, someone at work has talked to them about their progress.
✅27% more likely to report that their opinions seem to count at work.
