My role as a Wicked Evangelist (Marketing Manager) for the controversial van company, Wicked Campers

🏨 When you work for a campervan company, your work trips don't include a stay at the Four Seasons. You sleep overnight in the van.

This was my work travel policy 15 years ago, in my role as a Wicked Evangelist (Marketing Manager) for the controversial van company, Wicked Campers. It was a pretty great role, travelling around Australia and NZ building up the brand, talking to agents and customers, and vlogging the adventures.

It also included camping overnight in van depots. I remember the Perth depot didn't even have hot water!

I forgot all about this "travel policy" until I saw Elon Musk’s interview with Bill Maher this week, where Elon shares that he sleeps at the Tesla factory, and more recently, at the Twitter library.

Elon does this because he works crazy hours. But, our work policy was to sleep in a campervan to connect more with the customer experience, and that feeling of heading out on a roadtrip adventure.

When I stayed at campsites, so many people came up to me to talk: The van was a conversation starter and an easy way to make new mates. I realised how easy it was to drive and set up, and how to use the features at the back, to store everything you needed.

It kept me in touch with what customers felt + wanted, and the experience of the road trip adventure.

-> How are you staying in touch + connected with your customer experience?
