Controversial Career Advice

🥬 Controversial Career Advice: The grass isn't greener on the other side, it's just another shade of brown.

I heard this line from a senior leader in a business, who was about to take on the role of a mentor.

While it sounds cynical, I don't think it is at all.

Often, we look to other companies, other leaders to solve a problem of our own engagement, without actually taking a stocktake of our strengths, what lights us up, and what drains our energy.

We think the fix is to hop onto Seek.com and find a new job, title, company or role that will solve our problem but often, finding a role that truly lights you up requires a lot of intentional reflection.

It's why I'm such a fan of Jenny Blake's Pivot Method, where her first step before making a move is to go through the Plant stage to build that self-awareness.

This article from the WSJ seems to pick up on this theme: Millions quit jobs for new ones over the past year, but recruiters say many workers wish they hadn’t jumped ship."
