This Brisbane Broncos coaching spill provides a very interesting case study on team culture.

I was reading an article today where various players weighed in on their prediction of the future coaching role. I’m pretty sure this quote from Cooper Cronk about Kevin Walters was only a little snippet of a larger opinion on what makes a great coach (surely..?)!

The great NRL coaches (Craig Bellamy’s and Wayne Bennett’s of the world) seem to have a more strategic approach to coaching, they intensely scrutinise opposition videos, collate the data, create smart plays off these observations. They know the unique strengths of their own players and know the right time/position to play them.

A good “motivational talk” is probably helpful at half-time during the third State of Origin match when you’re 12 points down.

Being a great motivational talker over the course of an entire NRL season? Not sure if that can sustain high performance. Coaches need to deliver more than inspiration.

What do you think? What do great sporting coaches do well?
